ChatGPT – an indispensable partner for e-learning specialists? Where and how it can be useful in corporate learning
The world is evolving, and new technologies are emerging with it. The web is exploding with news about the development of artificial intelligence and its impact on the future. Can it really replace an employee? Or is it just a tool that can make work easier?
On February 17, ChatGPT became available in Ukraine, which caused a wave of heated discussions. Some people are excited to test the chatbot, while others see it as nothing more than a hype toy. What is this ChatGPT, what are its capabilities, and can it help in the development of educational content? We have tested it and are ready to share the results.
What is ChatGPT
ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI. It uses a neural network to analyze the users’ speech, which allows them to engage in a dialog, answer questions, find ideas, and give advice.
ChatGPT differs from other assistants and bots in that it selects the answer based on the data it has. That is, it is not information taken from Google search, but a unique text written by the machine.
The development of ChatGPT is still ongoing, so currently only its demo version is available to all users, which is limited to data until September 2021.
How to launch it?
It’s very simple. To get access to ChatGPT, you need to have a Google or Microsoft account and register on chat.openai.com. To verify your account, you need to provide your phone number, to which you will receive an SMS with a confirmation code. That’s it, ChatGPT is ready to work!
What can ChatGPT do for corporate e-learning?
We couldn’t pass it up and decided to try out Chat GPT’s capabilities for creating e-learning content. Here’s what artificial intelligence can help with in corporate learning:
1. Developing a course structure draft
ChatGPT will be a great help in developing a training course structure. For the chatbot to create a draft, you need to describe the course topic, target audience, and topics to be covered.
How it works: If you have a draft of a learning material or an article that you want to create a course on, send the bot a link with the command to create the structure of the future course.
Advantage: Based on the information provided by the user, Chat GPT helps generate ideas and topics for the structure of the training course. It creates a draft that can be edited and used in the course. This facilitates the work of methodologists and reduces the time spent on analyzing ideas and structuring topics.
2. Generating questions for the test
ChatGPT can generate information and use its context to develop test questions.
How it works: All you need to do is send the chatbot a ready-made text and specify the details. For example, the type of questions, the number of answer options, the number of questions in the test, etc. ChatGPT uses data processing tools to find keywords and phrases and generate ready-made questions based on them.
Advantage: This makes test development easier and reduces the time required.
3. Analyzing articles and emphasizing the main points
You can use ChatGPT to highlight the main points and ideas from a learning material, any article or longread.
How it works: It is necessary to send the text to the bot for analysis and ask it to identify the main ideas. The system will highlight the most important phrases and sentences in the text and create short summaries that reflect the main meaning of the text.
Advantage: It allows you to significantly save time on text analysis, understand its content and highlight the main ideas. The theses analyzed by the system can be used to develop short training content or resources for maintaining employee learning.
4. Explanation of terminology and words translation
ChatGPT can be used to automatically analyze and translate technical terms or complex words. It is very relevant when developing educational content in fundamental or applied disciplines. When you need to use a lot of new and unknown terminology. In addition, a chatbot can help with contextualizing terms, adapting them to a specific industry or topic.
How it works: Write the terms you are interested in and ask the chatbot to explain them. The system will analyze them and prepare an explanation for you.
Advantage: It helps to explain complex terms. It can be useful when writing technical documents, working with terms in educational materials, or in any other case where you need to understand and use terminology.
5. Selecting recommendations
Another useful feature of ChatGPT is a collection of recommendations.
How it works: All you need to do is write the topic of the educational material or attach a link to an article. After that, the chatbot will select the appropriate movies, books, videos, and podcasts that will help you to delve deeper into the chosen topic.
Advantage: It helps to find useful recommendations on various topics. Ready-made selections can be used for additional training of employees, as well as for better understanding of the learning topic.
6. Quotation search
ChatGPT helps you find interesting quotes and motivational sayings from famous people.
How it works: It is necessary to write the topic you are interested in or the author whose quotes you are looking for. The chatbot will analyze its database and prepare the required list.
Advantage: It helps to find interesting quotes and theses on the topic you are studying. Get insights and advice from people who have experience in a particular field or have achieved impressive success in their careers.
7. Editing and simplifying texts
ChatGPT is a good tool for editing and simplifying texts. If you need to quickly check your training materials for punctuation or grammatical errors and edit them, just ask the bot to do it.
How it works: Copy the finished text and paste it into the chat. The bot will analyze it and offer a new modified version.
Advantage: Facilitates work and helps to save time on text analysis and editing.
ChatGPT: pros and cons
As an artificial intelligence and a tool, ChatGPT has its advantages and disadvantages. We have identified the most important ones for corporate e-learning that you should pay attention to.
Advantages when used in corporate e-learning:
– It can automate and facilitate routine work related to the development of learning materials.
– It helps to find new ideas for creating learning content.
– It facilitates the collection and analysis of learning content, which saves time on independent search on the Internet.
– It helps to create drafts that can be used in the development of training courses and activities.
Disadvantages and limitations when used in corporate e-learning:
– ChatGPT is not a search engine, so it can make mistakes. Before developing learning materials, it is worth checking the quality and veracity of the information.
– It is a neural network, not an expert in a particular field. It may lack deep knowledge in fundamental disciplines.
– The data it generates is limited to 2021. If you need information on current research or, for example, new laws for compliance training, the chatbot will not give you results.

It is necessary to understand that ChatGPT is still a bot trained on data from the Internet. That’s why it’s pretty good at guessing what answer to give if it concerns the most popular public information. Try chatting with it, and you’ll see that it’s pretty good at picking up answers about programming, school curriculum, marketing texts, book and movie recommendations. Here, it can definitely save you time and help with finding something new. But without carefully checking each sentence, I wouldn’t cook dinner following the recipes it generates.
